Description

About the Ben Tre Traditional Cultural Festival (Nguyen Dinh Chieu Festival)

The Ben Tre Traditional Cultural Festival (associated with the birth anniversary of the Cultural Celebrity Nguyen Dinh Chieu) is one of the largest indigenous cultural events in the Mekong Delta. The event is an ideal destination for tourists seeking to delve deep into history, enjoy folk art forms, and immerse themselves in the authentic lifestyle of the people in the "Land of Coconuts."

1. Meaning & Significance

The festival is held annually in July to commemorate the birthday of Mr. Nguyen Dinh Chieu (affectionately known as Cu Do Chieu) – a patriotic poet, an exemplary teacher, and a respected physician of the people of Southern Vietnam. The event is not only a ritual to pay tribute to a historical celebrity but also a space to preserve Intangible Cultural Heritages, maintain the local character of valuing loyalty and gratitude, and spread Vietnamese cultural values to international tourists.

2. Key Activities

Attendees will experience a diverse cultural space, divided into two main parts:

  • Traditional Rituals: Taking place in a solemn atmosphere with incense offering ceremonies, the reading of funeral orations (van te), and visiting the mausoleum of Cu Do Chieu, helping tourists understand the moral principle of "when drinking water, remember its source."
  • Activities:
    • Arts & Performances: Enjoy the Southern Vietnamese Folk Music (Don ca tai tu) Festival featuring hundreds of artisans; witness the costume contest of characters from the classic work Luc Van Tien, poetry recitals, lion and dragon dances, and martial arts performances.

    • Culture & Life: Participate in the traditional herbal medicine (thuoc nam) area with free health consultations and treatments (recreating the image of Cu Do as a physician).
    • Entertainment & Cuisine: Directly participate in folk games (pot-breaking, tug-of-war), traditional culinary competitions, and visit exhibition booths showcasing local economic and cultural achievements.

3. Travel Tips & Etiquette

To ensure a smooth and civilized festival experience, tourists should note:

  • Time: The event usually lasts for 3 days (from June 30 to July 2), with July 1 being the main festival day featuring the most vibrant activities.
  • Location: The Special National Relic Site of the Tomb and Memorial Area of Nguyen Dinh Chieu (An Duc Commune, Ba Tri District, Ben Tre Province).
  • Cultural Etiquette: The mausoleum area is a sacred spiritual space. Visitors are required to wear polite, modest attire (wearing ao ba ba or ao dai is encouraged) and maintain order when observing the incense offering ceremonies.
  • Local Recommendations: Optimize your itinerary by staying at nearby orchard homestays. Tourists can combine their trip with a xuong ba la (three-plank boat) tour through coconut forests, cycling to visit rural villages, or participating in workshops at traditional coconut candy craft houses to fully experience a day "living like a local."
