Description

1. Overview of the Nghinh Ong Can Gio Festival

The Nghinh Ong Can Gio Festival is a long-standing traditional folk festival deeply rooted in the worship of Ca Ong (also known as Nam Hai Tuong Quan / the Lord of the Southern Sea) – the supreme guardian deity protecting fishermen from fierce waves in the open sea. Maintained continuously for over 112 years, the festival signifies deep gratitude toward the ocean, praying for favorable weather, calm seas, national peace, and safe voyages with bountiful catches.

Recognizing this unique cultural value, the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism officially designated the Nghinh Ong Can Gio Festival as a National Intangible Cultural Heritage in 2013.

What creates the vibrant vitality of this festival does not lie in extravagant staging, but in the sheer authenticity of local life. Here, fishermen and coastal residents do not merely act as spectators; they are the active subjects, the very soul preparing and running the event. This cultural undercurrent is tightly bound to the livelihoods, memories, and unbreakable solidarity of the people who rely on the ocean.

2. Detailed Information

To ensure a fulfilling journey, visitors should take note of the exact schedule of the festival to avoid misleading information:

  • Time: The festival takes place over 3 days, from April 27 to 29, 2026 (corresponding to the 11th, 12th, and 13th days of the 3rd Lunar month).

  • Central Location: All core rituals and spiritual activities are solemnly held at Lang Ong Thuy Tuong (Can Thanh Town, Can Gio District, HCMC) – where the giant skeleton of Ca Ong is enshrined alongside its surrounding relic complex.

3. Experiential Journey

3.1. Traditional Rituals (The Ceremonial Part)

  • The First and Second Days: The festival opens with a proud Thuong ky (flag-raising) ceremony, followed by a solemn memorial service at the Rung Sac Martyrs' Cemetery to honor the heroes who fell for the peace of this land. On the evening of the second day, following the offerings to the community pioneers and ancestors at Lang Ong Thuy Tuong, the coastline comes alive, beautifully illuminated by a peace-praying lantern floating ceremony at 10:00 PM.

  • The Third Day (The Main Festival Day): The focal point of the entire event unfolds on the morning of the final day with the Grand Nghinh Ong Sea Procession. Hundreds of fishermen's fishing boats and canoes, adorned with vibrant flags and flowers, simultaneously depart from the Tac Xuat and Co Khi ferry landings to ride the waves out to sea, escorting the palanquin of Nam Hai Tuong Quan. On shore, a massive crowd of people reverently offers incense amidst the echoing sound of drums and gongs, welcoming the procession back with high-energy lion, unicorn, and dragon dances.

3.2. Cultural and Entertainment Activities (The Festivities Part)

The experiential space stretches from the Can Gio market beach to Can Thanh Park with a variety of activities deeply imbued with coastal charm:

  • Folk Games: Witness or directly participate in net-casting and crab-tying competitions, beach volleyball, and an eco-friendly green marathon protecting the environment.

  • Cultural Spaces: Explore art photography exhibitions, traditional fishing gear displays, and feast your way through the culinary festival featuring fresh, locally caught seafood.

4. Practical Travel Tips

To ensure that watching the palanquin of Ca Ong ride the waves becomes a truly healing and fulfilling memory, keep these essential tips in mind:

  • The Route: Can Gio is located approximately 50 kilometers from central Ho Chi Minh City. Visitors need to cross the Binh Khanh ferry and drive along the road cutting through the mangrove forest, which belongs to the World Biosphere Reserve. It is highly recommended to depart early to avoid ferry traffic jams and ensure you arrive at the Tac Xuat landing before 9:00 AM on the main festival day.

  • Cultural Etiquette & Environmental Protection: Lang Ong is a sacred space of belief; visitors are required to choose polite, modest attire. Furthermore, in response to the "Green Festival" campaign, actively say no to single-use plastics and discard trash in designated areas to protect the marine ecosystem.

  • What to Pack: Since you will be attending the festivities under the intense, characteristic coastal sun, be sure to pack sunscreen, a wide-brimmed hat, sunglasses, and some small-denomination cash for quick payments at small stalls or seafood rafts.

  • Optimize Your Itinerary: Turn your trip into a mini-vacation by staying at nearby eco-homestays. You can pair your experience with kayaking through the mangrove forests, visiting the monkey island or crocodile farm, and savoring the famous grilled oysters on floating rafts gently bobbing on the water to fully understand a day in the life of a true Can Gio local.
