Description

1. About The National Reunification Festival

The National Reunification Festival is a sacred historical event of national significance held in Quang Tri province. Taking place right at the Hien Luong Bridge on the 17th parallel—the historical dividing line between North and South Vietnam - this festival is a momentous occasion commemorating the Liberation of the South and National Reunification Day on April 30th.

The Hien Luong Bridge and the Ben Hai River are not just a relic complex; they are historical witnesses to a painful period of division and the nation's fierce desire for peace. Held exactly at the 17th parallel, this event serves not only to remember the sacrifices and losses of the past but also stands as a brilliant symbol of national reunion. The festival carries profound educational meaning, honoring the spirit of a united and undivided country.

2. Key Activities

The activities within the festival focus on recreating a heroic atmosphere and celebrating the joy of reunification.

  • Rituals: The most sacred highlight is typically the Flag Hoisting Ceremony for National Reunification at the Hien Luong Flagpole, along with solemn incense-offering rituals and releasing flower lanterns onto the river to commemorate fallen heroes.
  • Festivities: The festive atmosphere usually continues with traditional boat racing on the Ben Hai River, accompanied by lively art and musical performances. These activities create a joyful ambiance that deeply connects the local community with visitors.

3. Travel Tips & Etiquette

  • Time & Location: The festival takes place annually on and around April 30th at the Hien Luong Bridge area, 17th parallel, Quang Tri province.
  • Cultural Etiquette: Due to the historical and solemn commemorative nature of the festival, visitors should prioritize polite and modest attire (such as collared shirts, long trousers, or traditional ao dai) when participating in the main ceremonial activities.
  • Personal Preparation: The weather in Quang Tri in late April marks the beginning of the intense hot and dry season. Be sure to bring a wide-brimmed hat, an umbrella, sunscreen, and plenty of drinking water to stay hydrated during outdoor activities.
  • Local Recommendations: You can spend extra time exploring other famous historical sites within Quang Tri's special national monument system—such as the Vinh Moc Tunnels or the Quang Tri Ancient Citadel—to experience a complete and profoundly moving historical journey.
